A 4.5 meter tall replica of the Squid game doll appeared in Sydney overnight

“Mugunghwa kkoci pieot seumnida. »If you’ve watched a hit Netflix series Squid game in its original Korean audio, the singsong-y vocals from the first episode – and the first violent play – probably haunted your sleep. (The English dub wasn’t that scary.)

And this morning a giant pigtail doll replica with motion sensing eyes arrived in Sydney, almost out of nowhere. But luckily that won’t bring the players down… at least we don’t think so.

The 4.5-meter version of the doll appeared north of the Overseas Passenger Terminal at The Rocks as a Halloween installation. It has been officially ordered by Netflix and will remain until nightfall on Monday, November 1.

She weighs three tons, and just like the doll in the show, she can turn her head and sing “red light, green light”. He’s even flanked by guards dressed in pink jumpsuits and masks.

Enter the arena to participate in a less deadly version of the classic children’s game. Players will be asked to register via QR codes and present proof of vaccination (or medical exemption). It follows the same rules as the series – running on the green light, taking a break at the red light, and hoping you don’t get caught moving – with added social distancing. Players who break the rules will be eliminated (well, they are just asked to leave).

The design of the animatronic doll in the series was based on Younghee, a prominent female character in Korean textbooks of the 1970s and 1980s. Younghee was often accompanied by Cheolsoo, and together were the Korean equivalent of Jack and Jill.

Squid game is Netflix’s most-watched series to date, reaching number one in 94 countries after more than 142 million households worldwide.

And the craze swept through Sydney: a Korean restaurant [Burger Patch] served a menu inspired by the popular series and played safe versions of the games in store. Until November 5, he’s making dalgona candy – the flat honeycomb with shaped footprints – that you can snack on, with a prize if you can finish it in 10 minutes.
