Aurora hosts closing ceremony for marijuana-funded recreation center

Aurora’s newest recreation center is funded entirely by tax revenue from marijuana.

AURORA, Colorado – The City of Aurora hosted the end of beam ceremonial event at its brand new recreation center.

Construction of the new 76,000 square foot recreation center is expected to be completed in early 2023.

The center will be located at 25400 East Alexander Drive on 600 acres west of the Aurora Reservoir and south of the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds in southeast Aurora.

The $ 41.9 million project is funded entirely by tax revenue from marijuana, according to the city. Construction on the project began in February.

Features of the center will include an indoor pool with waterslide, poolside party rooms, a fitness area that includes a 1,000 square foot fitness turf area, gyms group exercises, multi-purpose community rooms, a gymnasium, an “8” running track with various elevations and a 20,000 square foot indoor sports complex.

The city said the center will also include integrated public art.

After a public process, Aurora’s Art in Public Places program selected the Indianapolis Project One Studio artist team to develop an art installation, “Florescence,” which will be integrated into the recreation center.

“I am delighted with the progress made at the Center de loisirs du Sud-Est,” said Aurora Pro Tempore Mayor Françoise Bergan. “The planners and architects really listened to the community to create a design compatible with the natural setting, which takes advantage of the mountain views and offers the activities so popular with families in our neighborhoods. Can’t wait to go down the waterslide and jog on the elevated running track. It will be a great convenience for our residents. “

The city said it received nearly 2,700 responses from the community on its vision for the center during a rally process in 2019. The feedback received ultimately shaped both the exterior look and feel of the center as well as the internal equipment listed therein, by city.
