You’ve probably seen your fair share of BMW M3 Touring replicas, but most have been based on a previous generation 3-series wagon (F31). This impressive build dates back further in time, particularly as far back as 2000, when BMW secretly built a unique M3 with a long roof based on the E46 generation. It won’t be until later next year that there will actually be any M3 Touring series production.
So far someone has taken matters into their own hands to build their own high performance Bavarian wagon. YouTuber Calvin’s Car Diary Patiently waits for his fast âhybridâ to be finalized after combining a 3 Series Touring with an M3 Coupé. Even though it is still a car under construction, the unofficial M3 Touring E46 is already a faithful interpretation of the BMW concept of 21 years ago.
Originally red, the one-of-a-kind car was recently painted to match its inspiration Chrome Shadow Metallic color from which it also borrowed the wheel design. It looks fresh from the factory because, apart from the new coat of paint and shiny alloys, it has new lenses for the xenon headlights, original M3 mirrors to match the Touring body, and grilles for the Touring body. OEM front fender. The owner made a change from the concept by insisting on having a sunroof which was lacking in BMW’s unique creation.
The badges all over the car are new as are the taillights, but a few trim pieces are still missing here and there. Also, the car rides much higher than it should and therefore the suspension needs to be changed to bring the M3 wagon closer to the road in the same vein as the concept.
Then there are the oily lumps as the S54 engine and gearbox from the M3 Coupé donor car will also receive special attention, as will the wiring and pretty much everything in between. All in all, it’s safe to say that the project is a massive undertaking. The quad exhaust is missing and the interior is not finished, so it’s safe to say that the sporty wagon is still a bit of a diamond in the rough at the moment.
