Captain Eric J. Hawn, commander of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington, announced the Civil and Military Engineers of the Year 2022.

Gerrell Grant, Head of Electrical Engineering, Design and Construction Business Line and Lt. Cmdr. Clinton Lawson, Director of the Public Works Department of the Plant Engineering and Acquisition Division (FEAD) in Annapolis, were chosen as Civil Engineer and Military Engineer of the Year, respectively.

Grant and Lawson were selected from a competitive pool of talented engineers. The nominees for Civil Engineer of the Year were Nathan Johnson, Department of Public Works (PWD) Annapolis, Jason Grimes, Design and Construction Division, Kaleo Pedrina, PWD South Potomac-Indian Head and Kalpesh Patel, PWD South Potomac-Dahlgren . Military Engineer of the Year nominees were Lt. Samuel Beering, FEAD PWD Quantico, Lt. Nathan Henderson, Resident Construction Officer Joint Base Andrews and Lt. Cmdr. Bart Laycock, FEAD PWD Washington.

Grant was surprised to be rewarded with this honor and above all thanks his wife for “being his greatest cheerleader”.

“I am extremely touched and honored,” said the South Carolina native. “I will keep this recognition with the highest considerations. I would be put off if I did not also thank all of my current and previous supervisors who have played a major role in my career development. I also want to pay tribute to all of the extraordinarily talented people I work with side by side. “

Grant has led 14 professional engineers and architects across multiple disciplines in the execution of construction projects from concept to completion, including pre-award and post-award design actions for over 100 projects at eight sites in the district. of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. He has managed over 40 projects valued at $ 200 million for the Naval Research Laboratory, supporting the design and construction execution. As Senior Electrical Engineer, Grant was responsible for solving detailed technical issues and mitigating project delays. He applied advanced engineering concepts and principles to provide innovative and precise recommendations to correct unforeseen failures in the electrical system.

Lawson noted that he was honored to be nominated for the award.

“I am extremely grateful for the mentorship of my senior leadership and the successes my team has achieved through their persistence and hard work in moving the mission forward every day,” said the New Jersey native.

Lawson has led more than 60 government civilians and military personnel and approximately 400 contractors in the execution of design, procurement and construction on more than 65 projects and five major facility operational support contracts. He played a pivotal role in solving complex engineering problems for the historic refurbishment of the Naval Academy Chapel, construction of the new cybersecurity facility (Hopper Hall), and mechanical upgrades at Rickover Hall. He developed creative solutions to minimize mission impacts for a $ 45 million renovation of MacDonough Hall to allow continuity of college courses and sports, while reducing the cost of the project.

NAVFAC Washington is proud to participate in the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) annual Federal Engineer of the Year (FEYA) program to recognize the outstanding contributions our engineers make to the profession, to our sustained commanders. and the communities in which we live. Lawson and Grant were nominated to participate in the general NAVFAC SYSCOM Engineer of the Year program for even greater recognition.
