Homemakers Furniture in Urbandale launches in-store liquor purchases

Now, when shopping for a sofa or a new dining set, you can sip a cold beer or a glass of wine. Furniture store based in Urbandale Home furniture hopes to see another major retail success with its recent launch of in-store liquor purchases at its 215,000 square foot showroom.

The popular stop for local interior design enthusiasts launched its in-store liquor last month at the store’s HOMEgrounds cafe which serves snacks like cookies and Starbucks coffee drinks.

The store’s cafe now offers a selection of beers, wines and sodas for $5 a drink for customers to “sip while they shop.”

Assistant Vice President Jason Merschman said the recent move is part of the company’s plans to improve its subway shopping experience.

“At Homemakers, we are reinventing the furniture shopping experience. In 2019, we rolled out our commission-free sales policy to help remove some of the stigma surrounding the high-pressure buying experience often encountered with a commission sales team,” Merschman said in a press release.

What alcohol can customers order from Homemakers?

The Homemakers Furniture menu now includes beer and wine.

Canned and bottled beer options from local craft breweries and long-time industry giants are available in the store’s cafe. Customers can order 16-ounce bottles of Bud Light and Michelob Ultra alongside cans of Busch Light.

Craft beers include an IPA from Iowa City-based Big Grove Brewery & Taproom, which just opened a space near downtown Des Moines and Ruthie lager from Exile Brewing Co.

Truly Seltzers in Fruit Punch and Strawberry Lemonade flavors come in 12-ounce cans. Customers can order a Chardonnay, Pinot Gris or Cabernet from Sutter Home in a 6-ounce glass or by the bottle.

Mershman said the company’s in-house alcohol availability is the next step in reinvention.

“We’ve reinvented our coffee selection and brought in a full Starbucks coffee ‘which we proudly serve,'” Mershman said. “Now we are excited to offer beer and wine to people who might enjoy these beverages while shopping.

Customers can order lattes, mochas, cappuccinos and espressos as well as frozen drinks and teas to sip while shopping.

“Our goal is for everyone to enjoy the shopping and browsing experience.”
