Robinson Engineering Consultants, LLC. (REC), in direct coordination with Pierre Bourgeix of Butchko•ESI, David Hess of Cord Data and Robert Brennan of Sentinel Connector Systems, unveil a new cabling infrastructure solution that is set to change the way worlds of silicon and fiber to security and energy efficiency surrounding data transmission.
As Brett D Robinson, Ph.D., President/Chief Design and Test Engineer for REC points out in a white paper on this new solution, there are nearly two billion global ports connected to the United States, in the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, and island nations alone.
“Data infrastructure has seen great progress over the past 30 years; however, the one place where very little has been done for future advancements is the PC board, the jack connections, and especially the shielded cable/wire gauge advancements,” Robinson explained. “While chip technology has advanced with NVIDIA, AMD and INTEL vying for greater processing capacity, it has done little to help the global pressure it has placed on power consumption and energy, primarily due to signal amplification requirements.”
The data transmission and security industry, he added, “has struggled with the pull of technological advancement, its effects on our global resources, but has no real-time insight into how to achieve it”.
As Bourgeix points out, “We are working on 30 to 40 year old infrastructures that will not protect us at all. And we’re not talking about fiber anymore, because fiber now becomes the problem, and you’ll see things go in another direction pretty quickly. Currently, if you take an EMP attack, you are unprotected. If you don’t have this new kind of cabling infrastructure that is now available today, you’re done.
Massive energy savings
This advanced solution has been created to serve a dual purpose as it incorporates EMI/EMP/Transient Energy protection and features a state-of-the-art design that insures and protects the data infrastructure, preventing harmful RFI intrusion on circuitry through a line strip designed against EMI/EMP/TREE, which can permanently harm and create inefficient energy and power consumption.
“We like to call this innovative new solution, ‘The Green Infrastructure of the Future,'” noted Robert Brennan, CEO of Sentinel Connector Systems, Inc. in York, Pennsylvania. time for advanced “new green cabling infrastructure” because spending millions of dollars a week just to run data centers due to archaic infrastructure is ridiculous.
To incorporate a real way forward, Brennan and Robinson said electronic design institutions will need to incorporate a solution that must establish a one-time monetary outlay on their current infrastructure with a clear ROI over the next 3-year period.
“We really have to worry about the future not only when it comes to RF intrusion protection, but also power consumption, which is massive in data centers, for example,” Bourgeix noted. “This same new infrastructure we’re talking about doesn’t just protect against EMP/EMI, it’s green infrastructure, which equates to an 80% reduction in heat. Right now we’re spending amazing for cooling data centers, so most of the energy consumed goes into that.”
He continued, “With this new cabling technology and the InvisiJack Cat 8/25G, we now have the transport potential and the right design, so the focus is now on industry education and need for everyone to move forward with this. Yes, there will be a high upfront cost, but with the energy savings that can be achieved with the new infrastructure, you can get a payback within three years. »
This revolutionary new solution features Stripline RJ45 products, shielded cabling and unique PCB materials for high speeds well in excess of 5GHz, and is currently in production at Sentinel Connector, York Pa. Additional features include shielded RJ45 Cat 8/25g (stripline) Class 1 shielded low resistance, high speed copper cables, plus the path of lower resistance “Femto” based circuit board materials, instead of the old FR4 standard.
The InvisiJack features the innovative improved design of the Cat 8/25g shielded RJ45 jack, with a true non-magnetic shielded RJ45 connector for higher speed copper cabling, as 25Gb/s is necessarily more power efficient than Cat 5/1G and Cat 6./10G.
As Bourgeix points out, another key aspect of cabling is that there are “no RF resonances”, so you can transmit more data and faster for less cost. While there will be naysayers, Bourgeix is confident that this new technology will force chipmakers to rethink their board designs and, more importantly, their reliance on highly resistive FR4 fiberglass circuit boards.
“FR4 has always been their favorite baby, but that’s because that’s all they know. We’ve found that Femto “Teflon” internal lamination using German silver over pure copper lines is the way forward,” Bourgeix said. “And when you mention that you can have better infrastructure with an 80% reduction in the heat spent, they all look and say, ‘it’s time to change the architecture.’
