For those who want a souvenir of Orem’s Hillcrest Elementary School, Monday is the big day.

This is the day the town of Orem will launch an online auction of items left by the Alpine School District when he left school.

Home and charter schools have already made their choices, but according to Trevor Bell, purchasing and budget manager, there’s a lot more to get rid of.

“Desks to the left, whiteboards, children’s chairs, two full playgrounds and more,” Bell said. “The auction is being managed by Public Surplus based in Provo.”

The auctioned items will appear on Orem’s website at 8 a.m. on Monday. The auction will last two weeks. After that, arrangements will be made to pick up the items, according to Bell.

Bell noted that both playgrounds are sold as complete sets and that it will take a little more paperwork, such as insurance validation, before they can be transported.

“Buy a little piece of Hillcrest before it turns into a big park,” Bell said.

Orem bought the school two years ago and has gone through an extensive process that included public meetings and the assessment of design options as he prepares to transform the site into a new municipal park.

The whole school will not be demolished. Orem city council voted to keep the newer parts of the building which include the gym and professional kitchens for potential community use.

At this point, Bell said the city is still not sure exactly how these two areas will be used, so kitchen and gym items will not be involved in this auction.

Bell said he was anticipating another auction as the school demolition and park construction approached.

The new park will include a number of amenities, including walking trails, playgrounds, open fields for athletics, private mediation areas for pickle ball, new restrooms and more.

The park will span just over 9.2 acres and include dining pavilions as well as indoor options during the colder months.
