With all the lists and shopping, parties and planning during the holidays, life can start to seem a little blurry. Luckily, there’s a light shining through the haze of the Christmas season – and its bright red nose is ready to light up the indoor Hafen Theater when Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer takes place from November 25 to December 22.
Showcasing all the nostalgia of Claymation’s classic Christmas movie, this festive favorite is the perfect way to combine childhood memories with the energy of live theater in one perfectly wrapped package.
“It’s an exact, word-for-word, song-for-song replica of the animated classic,” said director Alan Coats. “The people in charge of the adaptation were very strict, making sure that the clothes of each character resembled the clothes of the cartoon, the paint colors on the set matched those of the film. It’s literally watching your TV take life on organizing.”
It’s a magical moment that Coats has happily brought to theaters nationwide for over six years and he can’t wait to share it all with Tuacahn audiences.
“When you add the human quality to it, these characters become even easier to understand,” Coats said.
Comparing Rudolph’s costume style to that of The Lion King on Broadway, Coats said the puppets are “masterful” and it takes particularly engaging actors to bring them to life.
“It really is a remarkable musical,” said Scott Anderson, artistic director of Tuacahn. “The costumes, the scenography, everything is there to bring you back to the nostalgia of your childhood Christmases.”
Coats hopes people will take the time to revel in the reminiscence, as well as recognize the timeless music and message hidden within the enduring branches of this musical.
“There couldn’t be a more topical theme than this show’s theme,” Coats said. “It’s about misfits, or what people initially think are misfits. This show is about how we treat people, how we see them, and how even those who are different, like Rudolph, can really save the day.”
