This ingeniously macabre movie poster is an online hit

From Dune to The Batman, we’ve seen some pretty spectacular movie posters over the past twelve months. But often, older is better — and going all the way back to 2000, this awesome American Psycho commercial is killing it on Reddit right now.

At first glance, it looks like an American flag with the stripes depicted as streaks of blood, right? That would be pretty clever – but look a little closer, and it’s even smarter than that. Like all the best print ads, there’s more going on here than meets the eye.

See those buttons? See how the stars are actually printed on fabric? That’s right, what you’re looking at is a shirt and tie – presumably belonging to one Patrick Bateman. And that blood presumably belongs to one of his victims.

Conceived by Saatchi & Saatchi EN for TVNZ 2 in New Zealand, the advert recently resurfaced on Reddit – where it’s proving very popular (sorry). “I wanted to find something wrong. It’s just perfect,” one user comments, while another adds, “When I saw it was a tie, I gasped.” “Design home run”, succinctly sums up one user.

Indeed, there’s no such thing as a seamless optical illusion, especially one that captures the essence of the subject so perfectly. Much like the Boston album cover that recently ignited the internet, this one is designed to make you double, or even triple,-take. It’s no surprise the American Psycho ad went gold in 2009 AXIS Award.

From this brilliant lockdown-themed Kit-Kat poster to this awesome Norwegian Airlines ad, we’ve seen some great designs printed over the past few months. Want to create your own ad? Check out our guide on how to download InDesign.
